Shiloh April 6-7, 1862
It began on a Sunday morning, and was named after a country church near the battlefield. The Union soldiers weren't prepred for the impending charge of Confederate soldiers. The Confederates attacked at 3 am, totally taking the Union troops by surprise. Bad roads and weather contributed to the delay of Union reinforcements, but when they got there, it took them 2 days of fighting to drive the Confederate troops back. No ground was gained, no strategic town was taken, all that was gained from this Union victory was the evacuation of Confederate troops from much of Tennessee.
